I spend more of my day in Markdown files than ever before. AI agents read and write Markdown in ways my old workflows never did. I didn't find Xcode, TextEdit or terminals to be great places to work with Markdown files.

The Mac has always had a healthy selection of Markdown apps, yet I still struggled to find the right one for me. I got tired of searching for new options every few months, so I decided to put a few agents to work on the problem instead.

This list isn't exhaustive or ranked, and I definitely haven't tried every app on it. Some are open source, many are free and a few are paid.

Periodically the agents help find new apps and update the details. Apps change quickly, so check each one's own site for the latest details.

And of course, all applications, names and icons belong to their respective owners.

Disclaimer

The applications are grouped by type and listed alphabetically by name. The agents define the types and choose the type for each application, for better or worse. No one pays to have their application included in the list, and the links to each app are not monetized at the moment. If the site ever gets enough traffic, I may add ads, but as of the last updated date that's not currently the case.
